Combat Monsters - Post-PostMortem

Combat Monsters - a great game made by Rubicon, a small shop.  Seen by devs as a financial failure, despite producing $110k expected in profits.  Fun game, however!

"The big bulge at the beginning was feature assisted, so to make an accurate forecast for the year, I’m just going to take that last month and multiply it by 12. With the other versions included, that’s about $110K for the year, assuming it doesn’t tail off more.
About $20K of that went on one-off payments for various things during development, so our team of six would have to share $90K between them. And this is skipping over inconvenient details like paying tax, insurance, rent, utility bills, server costs and etc., bringing the useable total nearer $50K."

They included this really interesting chart, which they said was more or less mirrored in iPhone, PC, and Android sales.

The article also talked about 3 tiers of players - freeloaders, the $3 min purchase folks (me among them), and the "Whales".  Whales -- for Devs, it means people who over-spend.

This Combat Monsters article talks about how devs actually got complaints from Whales that there wasn't more content to purchase.  HA  (Not going to hear something like that from me!!)

What I found most interesting is that I play this game regularly, dedicatedly, and I hadn't even considered that I only paid $3 for the game.  Normally, I wouldn't have paid anything for a game like this -- but something about it charmed me and I wanted to show some support.  Apparently all that didn't cut it.

They have some really great commentary at the end.  Someone read the article & wanted to try it as a 'paid game' by buying the $3 tripler.  They couldn't get the transaction through & blamed Apple.  Dev's responded, "re iTunes, it's not without problems at times, but at least it's not google - they're still throwing away about 10% of all developer earnings through "internal market error". Too busy making new doodles I guess."

Apple is so much more 'locked down' for Devs AND takes such a big cut (33%?) but they also have a lower piracy rate.  I never had any probs buying stuff from Apple, but ... I wasn't inclined to buy much. Google Play Appstore is strangely just as flawed as Apple's Appstore, but I can buy stuff (& do often)!  However, I can also very easily download stuff & block permissions (effectively getting paid apps free) and it's almost as easy as dloading it thru Google Play.  So I'm surprised the complaint is not more about piracy & less about Google having some accounting issues.

I'm writing this blog post b/c this is one of my fav games, and it's interesting to learn how they don't feel happy about their $110k game.  Better luck next time, Dev's!

Game info:  Combat Monsters is a really cool game.  It's a 'strategic CCG' (collectible card game) played on a hex map where players heroes use monsters, gear, spells, and runes to kill the other hero.  There are a lot of strategies here, but intelligence generally prevails over an EXPENSIVE deck, and luck is also often a factor.  I'd say this game has a lot of replayability.

IFTTT -- powerful, simple, dangerous, cool.

If This, then That.

http://ifttt.com/ is the site, the iPhone App is here.

So what the heck IS this thing?

Hmmmm...

Well, it creates 'rules' which monitor your different apps & sites, and if you (or someone else) does something at one of those things, IFTTT then responds by doing something else which you pre-define.

Like what?  Well, my first rule was -- if I post something on this blog, post it on my FB page.  And that worked.  So I then found 'a recipe' (that's what they call the 'rules') which checks this blogs & when I have new post, & it notes the post into my twitter feed.

So in a way, this is good b/c it automates tasks that I always wanted automated.

But it's really easy to imagine what could happen if this app starts posting the wrong stuff in different spots, or posting someone else's stuff into my stuff, or vice versa.

Imagine if you have a rule that says, 'anytime there's a bikini pic in FB, send me an email' -- but you make the recipe wrong and it sends that email to someone else?!?!?

And yes, you have to imagine that it could send other people's stuff to you.  Which could be good, bad, or annoying depending.

Opportunities for rockin' new stuff, opportunities for torturous hell!  Let's be careful with this one!

Here are my shared recipes so far (9/2013):

Ravenmark: Mercenaries - free, new, pretty cool!

Found Ravenmark: Mercenaries on Appshopper - free!
http://appshopper.com/games/ravenmark-mercenaries

Lots of great freebies lately.  Not enough room on the i-Thang to install all of them, but i'm trying.  Game of day is Ravenmark-Mercenaries.

It's like a tabletop miniatures combat game.  Totally free, but you can buy it & get rid of annoying pop up ads.  Or just ignore the ads?  (Is that possible??!?)

Wazhack for iOS - review

Repost from AppStore Wazhack review: 5 stars

First, ignore any 1-star reviews talking about KB flaw. Dev knows & plans to fix, said its a UNITY flaw. (Yes, it's annoying!)

Game is a neat 2 1/2d side scrolling Rogue-like. Has old school scroll names, unknown items, Identify & Uncurse, etc.
Game is *really hard*, also.
Last point -- at 300', game has $1 IAP to play more w/char class. There are 4x classes (male/female versions = 8), so to play all classes would cost $4 I think. I've only unlocked Knight/Valkyrie (1 class), feel like it was a dollar well-spent. Haven't tried others yet.
Other points --
Game speeds up / slows down. Dev said is based on keeping finge
View also zooms in/out.
Powerstones I think are like mines/grenades. Easy to kill yourself!!
Pop up tips are helpful at first.

For dev -- hard to see some items & bats! Feeding dog has a bug which occasionally only shows potions & no food. A help explaining spells & item effects would be helpful, rather than a 'help' which takes me to a website w/o help!! Could also use a help explaining all icons in UI. Messages list (under 'more') should start w/recent msgs first!!
I am happy to keep providing feedback -- maybe put a link in app to send feedback (besides savegames!! -- which doesn't work anyway bc of KB bug)?
I'm a fan of roguelikes since day 1 & I think this is my fav iOS Roguelike so far -- but havent tried for many days yet (& only 1 class, haven't gotten very deep before brutally killed, etc). I'd rec this game to any fan of roguelikes.
Lastly, I had a spell which tamed a bat. In another game, cast same spell while I had a dog -- made dog attack me! (Sucked.)
Also there's an identify scroll which does ID all items!! Gotta love that!

I'll repost my comments to my blog (rekzkarz.com) & anyone who wants can add comments / tips. Also toucharcade has a thread about this game.
And there's a wiki here.
r down, but seems at variable times.

SOL - the app, dude! A new form of sun clock!

I randomly noticed in AppShopper website that SOL app went free today.
I checked it out -- and I love it.

It's an app that shows you the sun's position all throughout your day AND midnight AND sunrise AND sunset.  And it looks so cool!

Their website is entertaining b/c it links to their blog, which had a very funny entry called Marketing’s a Bitch: Lessons from the App Store.  It was insightful into the mind of dev's, and hilarious.  I posted a long ranty comment, hasn't shown up yet.

Get it today for free (!!!), or wait a bit & you'll pay $3. Either way, it's cool. Take a look at the website & see what you think, watch the video, etc. http://www.juggleware.com/iphone/sol/

Get the app from iTunes!

iPhone 4 - a very good device, but not perfect

Copy of a comment I posted in re:
Today In IOS blog
http://tii.libsyn.com/wtf-is-wrong-with-the-ny-times

I had iPhone 3 & now iPhone 4. I feel it's an upgrade, particularly in *speed* (main flaw of iPhone 3), but I wouldn't harsh the commentary (news article) so extremely.
My first corp smartphone was a b/w blackberry w/great email. Battery lasted 7 days w/heavy use. My iPhone battery may last 1 day w/o recharging. My gf's iPhone 3 (I gave her mine) may last 2 bc she's a light user.
iPhone is my fav smartphone so far (had Treo, Blackberry, & Android 1.0). But it is not perfect by any means.
I chuckle w/people's hatred of AT&T & love of Verizon: all phone co's are bloated bureaucracies w/little reason not to overbill & under-service. (Another testimony to capitalism's myth of competition generating 'best of breed'.) my 3-4 yes w/Verizon included regular incorrect bills, a mischarge of $250 for texts, and a far higher rate than AT&T's monthly bill -- for a Treo w/far lower internet usability than my iPhone now.
So, while I tell folks that iPhone 4 is *the slickest computer* I've ever owned, it is not perfect.
Main flaws IMO include:
AppStore 'iron grip' over apps, locked down OS (so I can't disable or modify dictionary for flawed autocorrect -- why does 'me' get replaced w/'mr'?!?!), no simple option to have a small keyboard w/buttons instead of LCD KB (on Blackberry my touch-typing rate was fast. On iPhone, I can't type OK finally -- but not comparable speed.), 'sandboxing' of apps blocks a lot of basic info-sharing (music, files, etc) & requires redundancy or copying, and IMO a major flaw: app purchases w/o previews, very hard to get refunds, & general Appstore navigation *sucks*. Actually, if I'm going to point out flaws, let me rip iTunes a new one: iTunes acting as a 'gateway' for iPhone interaction reminds me of AOL being a gateway to Internet. As a Mac & Windows user, I was surprised when I was *required* to install a bloated iTunes on my PC to sync, that iTunes always has components running in the background, always attempts to re-do my file structures, and often will not let me sync the phone until I update iTunes (& recently required me to update QuickTime & overwrite my purchased QuickTime Pro). So I'd like Apple to open iPhone file structure and not require me to use iTunes for anything.
But to re-state: this is an amazing smartphone. W/a few essential apps (for me incl Dropbox, Evernote, Filer, TapForms, QuickOffice, AppShopper, Tune-In Radio, NetFlicks, CraigsPro+, etc) + awesome built-ins like email, safari, & calendar, it is the best I've used so far.
+ thanks to Google, my contacts stay sync'd wirelessly & my Calendar stays sync'd. Wireless sync (w/o the insult of a 'MobileMe' extra fee) seems essential. And I'm sure glad I got an iPhone *after* copy/paste was implemented & I'm glad Apple added multitasking as well (altho if u donthave iPhone 4 u r screwed there -- which is another frequent apple flaw IMO; screwing early buyers).
I am a fan -- but I'm not a brainwashed 'Apple-nationalist' like so many folks.
rekzkarz.com
I'd like an app for iPhone that lets me play CCG's (special 'collectible card games') on my iPhone.
Seems like something easy and doable, but it ain't done
-- except for Wagic.  But reviews say Wagic blows & it's a homebrew app.
Waiting for someone to make a useable 'play any CCG' app for iPhone.
How hard can it be???

a) Take 200 scans of cards
b) let people make decks of X cards
c) draw X cards for a hand
d) define a play area
e) let people play cards onto play area
f) have somewhere on play area to score points

And that's about it. Do we really need so much more?!?!?!

I'll play test it when it's built!  PROMISE.

Chaos Rings review

Subject:
Chaos Rings review

I want to like this iPhone game.  I paid $10 for it.  I like RPG's.  I like adventures.  People claim there is a story here.
The fact that the game has 3d graphics is nice, I guess.

But... gripes:
- 3d but it isn't really used.  You have a top-down run around for most of the game I've seen so far, and there are no camera controls (not that you'd need them anyways bc there's not much 3d action happening).
- the combat involves me clicking the same button combo repetitively, would love a 'repeat last' command.
- animation is 'dance' or move forward & back.  Guess this is like FF games?
- why are there buckets of stuff everywhere?
- why can i run back & forth I'm the same hallways & encounter more & more creatures?
- why do monsters drop chocolate?  Sounds like the wrong word.  Ha
- where is the 'inventory' screen with the doll?  The equip & inventory & gene screens seem like they couldve all been one clever screen.
- genes are kinda interesting, but WHY are we absorbing them?  Is this revealed in the story?
- char's can't jump, dodge, or move much.  Basically follow the path & try to follow a VERY awkward map.
- continuous 'fade to white' with same sound effect is just lazy programming.  I was annoyed after first 3x, now it's been hundreds of times.
- no options for peace.  All interactions are either 'click next for next pre-written line of bad dialogue' or *ATTACK*.
- killing hundreds of dogs, worms, monkeys, elephants, giant spiders -- anyone care that this sends a really bad environmental message?
- not a lot of non-linear that I've seen.

Personally, I'd like more 'strategy game' aspects and less repetitive animations & forcing me (player) to make a character run around a path where all options are locked in anyway.

It's a very pretty game w/repetitive sounds, creatures,  & gameplay.  Seems like it's 1, 2, or 3 baddies vs 2 'heroes' indefinitely.

Oh yeah, and you get new nicknacks & more chocolate.

And they never EAT the chocolate?!?!

I hope someone who reads this review hears my humor written into it? Bits not just a whine-fest, really.

Use your monkey genes, fool!
